By Anonymous July 9, 2004 -- Raleigh Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Law, board certified in plastic surgery provides guidelines for choosing a qualified plastic surgeon to perform cosmetic plastic surgery.
An individual can begin learning about a physician before ever meeting him or her. Start by visiting the American Society of Plastic Surgery web site at www.plasticsurgery.org. This will allow you to find board certified plastic surgeons in your area.
Before meeting a physician, you can learn a lot by visiting the office. A good plastic surgery web site will provide information about plastic surgery and the surgeon's experience and credentials. A web site should also provide the surgeon's philosophy on aesthetic surgery and patient care. The office environment can give you insight into a physician's aesthetic ideal. Is the office elegant, beautiful, contemporary and immaculately clean? Or are the furnishings outdated, mismatched or cramped? The attention to detail in a waiting area and other areas of the office can be representative of the way a physician looks at the world. Another thing to look at is the office staff. In many offices, staff members are warm and natural looking. In other cases staff members can appear to have very obvious unnatural looking plastic surgery. Staff members with large obvious breast implants not in proportion with the rest of the body, inflated unnatural looking lips, or eyebrows lifted to a postion where they appear to be perpetually surprised can also provide insight to the physician's aesthetic ideal.
Important Questions
When you are making the decision to have plastic surgery, there are a number of extremely important questions that must be answered. Chief among them are the following:
•What exactly is it that I want to achieve?
•Am I a good candidate for the surgery I’m interested in?
•Are there less invasive or even non-surgical techniques that could fulfill (or perhaps partially, but adequately, fulfill) my needs?
•What is the best technique for achieving the result that I want?
•Is my physician able to educate me about ALL possible surgical options?
•Is my physician qualified to perform the surgery I am interested in?
An individual who is interested in an aesthetic enhancement should therefore seek a surgically-trained specialist that has knowledge of (and experience with) a wide range of both surgical and non-surgical techniques.
There is only ONE organization that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties http://www.abms.org/ which certifies plastic surgeons: The American Board of Plastic Surgery http://www.abplsurg.org/. Over the last several years there has been a proliferation of “Boards” with titles that include words such as “Plastic” and “Cosmetic” in them. Aside from The American Board of Plastic Surgery, NONE of these “Boards” are recognized by The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Visit the ABMS website to see which specialties have ABMS recognition.
Hospital Privileges?
A hospital has access to information and records that the general public does not. Hospitals also have tremendous exposure to liability for procedures performed within them. They therefore will only grant surgical privileges to physicians that can demonstrate appropriate training and experience.
Although many aesthetic surgical procedures are not performed in hospital operating rooms, the fact that a hospital has granted a surgeon privileges for a given procedure ensures that the surgeon has met an accepted standard of competence. It also means that your surgeon will be able to take care of you at a hospital should any complications from surgery arise.
If you are planning to have plastic surgery performed, you should do your due diligence to determine if your surgeon has the appropriate credentials. This issue can be settled by the following simple question: Does my surgeon have hospital privileges to perform my surgery?
Aesthetic Vision
If you are satisfied that your surgeon has the appropriate training, experience and credentials, then the next step is to determine if you and your surgeon are ‘on the same page’ aesthetically. As you are about to undertake a permanent alteration to your outward appearance, you should be comfortable with your surgeon personally, feel like you communicate easily, and feel like you have the same vision for the aesthetic improvement ahead.
Adequate communication is invaluable, and you should be able to communicate clearly and easily not only with your doctor, but also with your doctor’s staff. Over the course of preparing for and recovering from aesthetic surgery, your doctor’s staff will have an important and active role. You must be absolutely certain that your surgeon’s aesthetic sensibility matches your aesthetic goals.
Before and After Photos
An experienced Plastic Surgeon will have before and after photographs of the specific procedure you have in mind. Professional looking before and after photos with consistent lighting and consistent patient position is imperative. Before photos showing patients frowning and wearing no makeup, followed by an after photo of a smiling, made up patient with a new hairstyle is not a good representation of a surgical before and after. Likewise, a before photo showing the patient's midsection with arms down by the hips or straight out to the side followed by an after photo with arms lifted in the air is not an appropriate representation of a surgical before and after photo.
Patient privacy is imperative, but in every practice there are some patients who are happy to share their experiences with others considering the same procedure. An experienced surgeon with satisfied patients should have many before and after photos and also patients who can share their surgical experience first hand.

By Anonymous April 27 2004 -- If a great set of plastic tableware tops Mom’s wish list this year, then you’re in luck. New, high-tech plastics are giving unbreakable dishes and drinkware a noticeable facelift – and a useful life far beyond the outdoor season.
“Better quality plastics like polycarbonate, polypropylene and acrylic blends create beautiful tableware that’s more durable and versatile than traditional acrylic and melamine products,” says Krista Fabregas, founder of KidSmartLiving. “Whether you're kid-proofing indoor tables or party-proofing outdoor living, you can now find just about any tableware item – from tumblers and stemware to dishes and serving pieces – made from these better plastics.”
But plastic products are rarely labeled by type and all come in a variety of styles, colors and finishes. Plus, most claim to be dishwasher-safe. So how do you know which to choose?
“All plastics are not created equal, but each has unique qualities,” Krista says. “If you know what to look for when shopping for plastic tableware, you're much more likely to choose a set that meets your needs and expectations.”
She offers shoppers these tips.
Unbreakable polycarbonate is the leader in better plastic tableware, and it’s no wonder –it’s the same material as bulletproof glass. This plastic gives the highest quality glass-like clarity to drinkware and tableware, and can be found in clear, tinted and even solid colors.
You’ll find that manufacturers generally label polycarbonate pieces as such, along with claims that items are unbreakable, microwave and dishwasher safe. These products tend to be more expensive than other plastic goods, but polycarbonate’s durability and clarity create great-looking tableware that can be enjoyed for years.
Die-hard polypropylene is a versatile plastic that’s often used to make inexpensive outdoor tableware – though some makers now offer looks that are very stylish indeed. Unbreakable polypropylene is easy to spot with its solid or slightly translucent color and softer, slightly rubbery feel. It’s safe for the dishwasher and some brands, such as Sea Glass, are microwave-approved.
Acrylic blends such as SAN (styrene acrylonitrile) produce drinkware and dinnerware that is long lasting, extremely break resistant and reasonably priced. These products can be clear, tinted or frosted, and carry claims of being shatterproof, dishwasher and microwave safe. Only a handful of makers produce tableware in SAN, so it can be difficult to find. The BentleyWare and Infinity brands offer good selections.
Acrylic, polystyrene and melamine are among the least expensive plastics to produce, thus they’re found in the widest variety of styles. But they may not be as durable or versatile as the other choices.
Acrylic and polystyrene won’t shatter, but can break if dropped. Products are often labeled “top rack dishwasher safe” but the heat of the dishwasher, even in the top rack, can quicky craze the surface — covering it with tiny cracks. While crazing doesn’t make the piece unusable, it does detract from its appearance. Hand-washing or dishwasher air-dry cycles are best for these products.
Melamine is used to create durable dinnerware in myriad styles. Full sets complete with large serving pieces are readily available in stores as seasonal ware. But while melamine dishes are dishwasher safe and very break resistant, they can warp or blister in the microwave, limiting their versatility. Melamine dishes typically are labeled “not recommended for microwave use.”
So, whatever Mom’s wish – stylish poolside ware, dishes for the RV, or durable family-friendly drinking glasses – there’s definitely a product that provides the perfect balance of style, care, durability and versatility. And shopping for the just-right gift is easy – when you know what to look for!

By Anonymous The benefits of low weight and cost means the marine industry is increasing the use of plastic pipes for water, compressed air and hydraulic services. The downside of plastic is a threat of fire spread where services pass through bulkheads and decks. Roxtec, the acknowledged leader in the supply of cable and pipe transit systems, have developed a new system for the safe sealing of plastic pipes. Their plastic pipe seal (PPS) is suitable for plastic and PVC pipes from 16 mm to 110 mm diameter.
The new PPS benefits from the multidiameter technology that is used throughout Roxtec's cable and pipe transit family. The multi-layer transit seal, with peel off layers, is easily customised to be an ideal fitting for the pipe diameter. The round seals are fitted to a sleeve which is welded into the fire barrier. The pipe passes through the sleeve, secured by round seals at either end. In the centre of the sleeve an intumescent material is inserted around the pipe. In the event of a fire, a pipe failure will cause hot gas to enter the inner chamber and activate the intumescent material. This swells to fill the cavity, seal the pipe and preserve the integrity of the fire barrier.
The PPS system will appeal to boat builders and repairers because it is based on a familiar and proven technology that is simple to install and totally maintenance free. The PPS has been tested and approved to withstand four bar pressure for water and gas. It has also been subjected to a 60 minute fire integrity test in bulkheads and decks made from aluminium and steel.
Roxtec produce a complete range of entry seals for cable and pipe penetrations. The unique multidiameter technology and adaptability allows for present and future needs. The entry seals protect against dust, water, fire, gas, pressure, vibration and electromagnetic interference. Roxtec has expertise in marine and offshore, telecom and industrial applications. A complete technical service is provided to designers, engineers and installers to enable the correct product to be specified.
